On the eve of the end of summer vacation, FASCA members participated in the Taiwan Night Market booth at a large-scale Asian Night Market festival in Maryland, organized by the MGY Foundation. The event drew 25,000 attendees, and FASCA DC stood out as the only booth dedicated to Taiwanese culture. Having built a strong reputation for cultural promotion in the DMV area recently, the chapter was specially invited by the organizers to join this major event. FASCA set up stalls to introduce "authentic Taiwanese-style" night market games, bringing the most charming, fun, and popular aspects of Taiwan's night markets to the mainstream public.
The featured games included "Baseball Nine-Square Grid," "Goldfish Scooping," and "Taiwanese Snack Poke-a-Prize" (Chuo-Chuo-Le). The Baseball Nine-Square Grid, a staple of Taiwanese night markets, was highly popular; the addition of inflatable baseball bats gave participants the feeling of being right in the heart of a Taiwanese night market. For Goldfish Scooping, colorful plastic fish were used instead of live ones, demonstrating environmental awareness and animal welfare. For the Poke-a-Prize game, FASCA members prepared a spinning wheel featuring images of six famous Taiwanese snacks: soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), pearl milk tea, pork belly buns (Gua Bao), braised pork rice, shaved ice, and meat brawls (Ba-Wan). Participants were required to read the names of these snacks after spinning the wheel. Many local residents were curious about the prizes inside the Poke-a-Prize boxes and remarked that this was their first time realizing how entertaining Taiwanese night market games can be.
As the night progressed, bands continued their energetic performances on stage. The evening breeze, combined with various night market skewers and pearl milk tea, added to the traditional Asian night market atmosphere. With Asian night markets and street foods becoming highly popular in the U.S. recently, many Americans expressed great appreciation for the fun nature of Taiwanese games. FASCA DC members also took the opportunity to invite everyone to visit the beautiful island of Taiwan, Formosa, in the future.
