FASCA D.C.

The Overseas Compatriot Culture and Education Foundation (OCCEF), in collaboration with FASCA D.C. and the Millennial Global Youth (MGY) Foundation, recently organized a "Taiwan-U.S. Youth Meet-up." The event brought together 40 teachers and students from FASCA D.C. and Taipei Municipal Sung Shan High School of Commerce and Home Economics (SSVS). This group of students from Taiwan and the U.S. had previously participated in English learning activities online; this event marked their first in-person meeting, resembling a "knowledge-based international net-pal gathering."
Sherry Li, a consulting mentor for FASCA D.C., has long supported and organized international youth language exchanges and cultural diplomacy activities abroad. Serving as the host for "OVERLAPPED @ D.C."—a city youth network initiated by the Hai-Hua Foundation—she works to promote interaction and friendship between Taiwanese and American youth communities. Her efforts aim to integrate Taiwanese culture and lifestyle into the American mainstream to enhance public understanding of Taiwan. Centered on the core concept of "OVERLAPPED," this physical gathering invited youth from Washington D.C. and students from Taiwan to explore innovative "overlaps" across different spatial-temporal settings, hobbies, living habits, and value propositions, allowing both sides to objectively experience their "similarities and differences."
Hsu Yu-ting, Director of the Applied English Department at SSVS, stated that youth from Taiwan and the U.S. learn more than just language from one another; more importantly, they gain an understanding of each other's cultural lifestyles and value differences, while naturally forming cross-cultural friendships. For the new semester, practical projects will be developed under the "OVERLAPPED" theme, encouraging students to use their creativity to discover interesting new things through the connection and overlapping of videos and photos on social media.
Li Shin-lung, CEO of the OCCEF, pointed out that while the overseas Chinese community often discusses "generational succession and sustainable heritage," and while elders focus on cultivating youth successors or electing the next chapter president, the youth are more likely thinking about Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO), Web3, Non-fungible tokens (NFT), and Decentralized Finance (DeFi). The roles, development models, and operational frameworks of the future generation have already shifted into an entirely new world.
