Spending Joyful Times Together in Ximending
西門町共度歡樂時光
The Taipei meetup between Millennials Global Youth (MGY)—a group of young overseas Taiwanese from Washington, D.C.—and their international buddies from Taipei Songshan High School of Commerce and Home Economics (SSVS) was successfully held this Saturday in Taipei. Youth from both countries gathered to exchange ideas and discuss the cultures and interesting anecdotes of their respective nations. This meetup allowed the participants to enhance their mutual understanding and build deep friendships.
During the event, the participating teenagers enthusiastically shared interesting facts and unique characteristics of Taiwan. First, they discussed the differences between wedding customs in northern and southern Taiwan, which was an eye-opening experience for the youth from Washington, D.C. Additionally, the group explored the common "North vs. South Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) debate" and shared information regarding common scam tactics found in Taiwan. These topics not only entertained the participants but also provided a deeper insight into the diversity of Taiwanese culture.
In addition to sharing anecdotes, the group discussed several iconic features of Taiwan. Taiwan’s beverage shops offer a vast variety of options, with some specialty drinks only available in specific cities or counties, leaving a lasting impression on the Washington, D.C. youth regarding Taiwan’s food and drink culture. Indigenous culture also became a focal point of interest as participants explored the lifestyles and traditions of Taiwan's indigenous peoples. Furthermore, discussions on regional accents and dietary habits between the north and south helped participants better understand Taiwan’s multifaceted and unique cultural identity.
At the end of the activity, the group headed to "Ximending," a popular hangout spot for young people in Taiwan, to experience the bustling urban scenery of Taipei. While shopping and exploring, the participants further deepened their interactions, making this meetup even more meaningful.
This meetup between Washington, D.C.’s Millennials Global Youth (MGY) and the international buddies from Songshan High School of Commerce and Home Economics not only allowed young people from different backgrounds to establish friendships but also promoted cultural exchange. It has laid a solid foundation for future cooperation and interaction. This meaningful "virtual hangout" initiative will continue into the next academic year, allowing students to grow and learn together while creating a bright future.
