美東時間2024年3月5日晚間,由波士頓、華府及紐澤西三區FASCA、臺頑少年郎基金會 (MGY)、普林斯頓中文學校 (PCLS) 共同主辦,一同跨海與位於臺灣南投水里商工的高中生們,進行一場線上英語會話交流。臺美兩地學生及導師們共有逾四十位參加。
這一場跨海連線的交流,首先由波士頓FASCA指導老師呂宗禧、華府FASCA指導老師劉麗英、陶占祥,和紐澤西FASCA指導老師張淳琪一起開場歡迎大家。在臺灣水里商工方面,則由觀光科主任傅靖瑄引導學生上線就緒。由於這是波士頓FASCA學員第一次與水里商工的學生見面,為了成功破冰,每一位學生都輪流自我介紹,並透過精心設計的一兩張投影片,看見彼此能文能武,身懷十八般武藝,興趣廣泛。
水里商工學員們相當認真以英文進行簡介,並分享自己喜愛的學科及日常生活。在美國的學員們也紛紛展現自己熱愛的各項課外活動。即便身處美國、臺灣不同兩地,學員們還是有許多共同的嗜好,舉凡棒球運動、音樂舞蹈、電玩動漫,和美食飲品等等。從輕鬆的話題中,透過指導老師們適時的引導,拉近學員們彼此的距離。
呂宗禧表示能促成本次活動,除了感謝在美國華府及紐澤西兩區的FASCA分會劉麗英、陶占祥和張淳琪三位導師的鼎力相助,也感謝臺頑少年郎基金會的居中牽線,更感謝水里商工校長徐文法、總務主任陳靜美、圖書館主任王異齡、觀光科主任傅靖瑄等大力協助支持,透過英語及生活文化交流來增強學生語言學習的動力。波士頓FASCA學員們在會後隨即討論活動心得與觀察,並由指導老師分享下次活動可以調整的訣竅,比方記住對方的一兩點興趣和專長、適時放慢英文語速與咬字清晰,將會讓參加活動的學員們有更多助益,並留下更深刻的印象。
On the evening of March 5, Eastern Time, an online English conversation exchange was held across the ocean between high school students from Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA) chapters in Boston, Washington D.C., and New Jersey, and students from Shueili Vocational High School of Commerce and Industry in Nantou, Taiwan. The event was co-organized by the three FASCA chapters, the MGY Foundation, and Princeton Chinese Language School (PCLS), with over 40 students and mentors from both locations participating.
The cross-border event kicked off with welcoming remarks from FASCA mentors Zong-Xi Lu (Boston), Li-Ying Liu and Jesse Taur (Washington D.C.), and Chun-Qi Zhang (New Jersey). On the Taiwan side, Ching-Hsuan Fu, director of the Tourism Department at Shueili Vocational High School, guided the students through the online setup. As this was the first time Boston FASCA members met with the Shueili students, each participant took turns introducing themselves to break the ice. Through one or two carefully designed slides, the students showcased their diverse talents and wide-ranging interests, proving themselves to be versatile in both academics and extracurriculars.
The students from Shueili Vocational High School gave diligent introductions in English, sharing their favorite subjects and daily lives. Meanwhile, the students in the U.S. showcased their passion for various extracurricular activities. Despite the geographic distance, the participants found many common hobbies, ranging from baseball, music, and dance to video games, anime, and food and drinks. These lighthearted topics, facilitated by the mentors, helped bridge the gap between the students.
Zong-Xi Lu stated that the success of this event was made possible thanks to the support of the FASCA mentors from Washington D.C. and New Jersey, as well as the MGY Foundation for facilitating the connection. He also expressed gratitude to Principal Wen-Fa Hsu, General Affairs Director Jing-Mei Chen, Library Director Yi-Ling Wang, and Tourism Department Director Ching-Hsuan Fu of Shueili Vocational High School for their immense support. The exchange of language and culture aims to enhance students' motivation for language learning. Following the session, Boston FASCA members immediately discussed their observations and takeaways. Mentors shared tips for future sessions, such as remembering one or two specific interests of their peers and slowing down their speech for clearer articulation, which will further benefit the participants and leave a more lasting impression.
